ENROLLMENT 2001
| The deadline for the Early Bird enrollments was December 1st. Enrollments exceeded last years Early Bird signups by over 100 campers. Camp is now 80% sold out for the summer with over half of the villages on a wait list status. Skylake has always guaranteed space for Early Bird sign ups. In the future we may be only able to offer that guarantee to returning campers and their siblings. Space in Girl's camp is extremely limited while there remains space in Boy's camp, especially in Sessions C + D. |

CAMP SURVEY
Every camper was mailed a survey at the end of the 2000 Season. A couple hundred were completed and returned. The input is very helpful and definitely keeps us on our toes.
First, let me indicate the requests that cannot be accommodated. We are not able to move the lake closer to camp and the Forest Service will not allow us to install a ski lift to the waterfront. But we will look into ways to make the hike down and back to the water a little more enjoyable. Campers seemed evenly split on the amount of free time versus organized activities being too much or too little. Most common complaints dealt with food, food, and food. To be fair, even food wasnt mentioned that many times. Siesta, early wake up, and cold showers were other items that appeared more than once. More ski times and more horses also appeared a few times.
Every body seems to like something different about camp. The campfires, friends, the counselors, Bass Lake, Gold Rush Day, cabin life, and time to just hang out were common themes.
All of the surveys will be read and discussed during staff training week so all of the staff gets a full flavor of campers needs and desires. We will continue to improve Skylake from your comments.

EMAIL QUESTIONS OF THE MONTH
Every Skylake Ripples will now have questions of the month. Everyone is asked to join in and send me a quick response. I expect hundreds of answers so unfortunately I wont be able to answer them all but please be certain I will read your answers and consider them in all of our decisions. Please email me at jpskylake@aol.com. We will start off with one real specific question that will produce immediate results and two that will be very helpful for planning.
1) What is your favorite breakfast cereal and what do you like to put in your cereal? (We plan to put out five cold cereals in addition to the normal hot breakfast every morning, this question will tell us what we should provide.)
2) What activity does Skylake not have, that you believe would be a good addition to the program?
3) What question would you like asked of all the other Skylakers in next months Ripples?
Next month I will provide a summary of the responses.

STAFF 2001
| Applications have recently been mailed to all of the staff members from 2000 that received favorable performance evaluations. In the next six to eight weeks we should begin to know who is going to be able to join us again in 2001. Already committed to return next summer is our Head Boys Counselor, Jeremy Bradshaw. Jeremy will be returning for his fifth summer at Skylake. Jeremy will be heading over to England in early February to look for a few more fabulous British staff members. Jeremy is devoting considerable time this winter to both the flying of his falcons and hawks as well as his passion for wildlife art. His watercolor on the cover of our Wilderness Trails
Yearbook is another example of the quality of his work.
Skylake has a basic structure for our staffing. We hire four JSTaff for both Boys Camp and Girls camps for each four-week session. Only former campers and usually only CILT graduates qualify for these limited and very sought after positions. We also hire 52 counselors. Counselors must be 18 years of age and be attending a four-year university. Although most of our counselors have completed at least one year of university study, we do hire around eight staff members who although admitted to college have just graduated from High School. These positions are again limited to former Skylake campers. Current campers that believe they would someday like to be on staff should remember that Skylake does not permit tattoos or body piercing, other than ears.

2001 IS GOING TO BE SPECIAL
Many improvements at Skylake are currently being planned. The addition of the sand volleyball courts last summer was a great success. The courts became not only a great activity but also a fun place to hangout. We all know how hot Skylake can be. So this year we are going to set up a picnic area adjacent to the courts with a water mist system. This should be a great place to sit and talk and be cooled down by the steady stream of mist.
Skylake has also purchased another Tige Ski boat. This brings our fleet of boats now to three Tiges, the old ski barge, and the ever-popular picnic barge. The newest boat will be outfitted with the wakeboard towing boom along with the overhead rack system to keep all the equipment properly stored but with easy access.
Skylake will continue to upgrade the cabins. We will complete installation of all new floors and doors on the boys side of camp. The residing of cabins will continue with at least four more cabins being completed prior to this summer.
The kitchen will see the installation of new hood and ventilation system. This is a long overdue improvement that should reduce the temperature dramatically and make the working conditions much nicer. In addition, the expanded hood and circulation will permit us to install commercial fryers. This will provide the ability to produce a few of campers favorites like Macdonalds quality French-fries, homemade tortilla chips, and real chicken nuggets. We will also be substantially upgrading our salad bar capability by installing two complete salad bars. Our goal is to have a better selection of daily items and to provide quicker access for more campers.
Skylake has obtained the use of a soccer field at the end of the Lake for most of the summer. Jon Moore, Program Director Extraordinaire, is a soccer coach when he is not working summers at Skylake. Jon will be heading up our soccer program this summer.
We will also be adding two more horses to our stable. This wont be for more campers going on rides, but will provide for back up horses to be used when a horse just needs a day off for rest. To meet this need in the past occasionally we did not have enough horses for our daily ride requirements.

WEBSITE IMPROVEMENTS
The website is being updated to list all of the campers that have signed up for camp. We will continue to update the list until 30 days prior to camp. At that time we will change the list to reflect the bus lists for the summer. If you have any question whether you are signed up for a specific bus you will be able to go on line to check for yourself.
We are also looking into the possibilty of a SKYCAM. A 24 hour live camera at camp to be broadcast on-line. This would be more to get a feeling of camp than to see individuals at camp.
